Mythbuntu Installation

If you have ever used one of the *ubuntu live CD's, you will be very familiar with the installation of Mythbuntu.

To begin, go ahead and let the default option load to Start or install Mythbuntu.

While Mythbuntu's live state is a far cry from one of the official *ubuntu live CD experiences, the simple install option is still available on the desktop. Mythbuntu's installer is nearly identical to *ubuntu's, making it unnecessary to detail the install process in this article. However, while simplifying the install process by being consistent with all other variations of Ubuntu, Mythbuntu's install is second-rate when compared to Mythdora's divergent yet polished installer.

I will show you the Advanced Installation option so you can see all of the options available during installation. The Standard Installation bypasses most of these steps so you can install the system as soon as possible.

First the installer starts with what is most important.

  • What type of system will you be installing?

There is a description given with each option to make the installer easy to use. MythDora has options very similar to this and it is good to see another MythTV installer follow their lead.

By default all of the official MythTV plugins are selected for installation. If you do not want to install any of them you can simply uncheck the box associated with each plugin.

Step 9 will install all of the official themes found in the MythTV wiki. You can later add more user contributed themes to the system but for now you will get the basic themes.

You may choose what services to install with the system during the initial install or later in the Mythbuntu Control Center. The MythTV Service is only available during the initial installation however. If you want to use a remote frontend or backend with your system I suggest you check the appropriate box now.

You can set a password for Mythweb access and MySQL Database root permissions during the next step.

The ability to use the machine with a remote is a must. Mythbuntu makes it easy to select which remote you want to use, much like Mythdora. Simply select your remote from the drop down list, and you are set.

If you are going to be using an ATI or Nvidia graphics card and would like to watch HDTV, load the proprietary drivers here. There is also a drop down list for selecting a video resolution and TV-Out option.

The final step is a review to make sure you want to write your changes to disk.

The system will now install. This may take about about 30 minutes, and will return you to a configuration window once the install has finished.
