How to Make a TV Antenna for HDTV

Build your own HDTV antenna out of a few coat hangers and a few parts from the hardware store. HDTV antennas do not need to be expensive or complicated. This excellent HOWTO was referenced on the MythTV mailing list.

Very much in the MythTV "build your own" spirit, this is worth a try if you use, or want to use, over the air HD. Use the comment form to let us know how you make out!

Works great!

I had all the parts around the house so it didn't cost me a penny. Gives me better reception than the Philips Silver Sensor indoor antenna I bought for $30. Works great standing up (in my case I hung it on the back of my entertainment center) or lying down.

re tv antenna

this video was great..showed how to do it properly...made the antenna.. then stood it up behind the sony breva on the window sill ..it rested on the blinds...was not to heavy...now i have 11 channels...live in st lambert quebec just off simard facing the champlain bridge...thanks for the good job

Tried, but did not work

Hello, I was very excited to try this and improve the reception of our DTV box. I tried it the way the video set it up, and also the way the link at the top of the comments suggested. This did not work as well as our $25 antenna. Any ideas. I took it apart and refiled all the connections and that did not work. I got the specific transformer from Radioshack also. Please help. Thanks, Aaron

I live in Sherman, Texas and I built the antenna and it works. I only had 3 channels and now i have 6. Still looking to improve though.

Antenna Works!

I built this antenna and it works beautifully! I live in Bowling Green, KY and can now get all 13 of our local digital channels. I also get very low level signals from Nashville, TN (65 miles away), but no picture or sound. I'm wondering if a bigger version of this antenna might just allow me to pick up those stations?

Wow

This antenna works great, before I got basically an unusable signal with my DigitalStream Converter Box. Now I get everything I want and more. Great design, I'm so happy!

home made HDTV Antenna

I wondered if it could be so easy. I put mine together and just leaned it up against the wall and it worked. I get 13 channels instead of 5. I was now curious and built another one using a piece of cardboard some wires from scrap phone cable and tape. Using the same measurements I was able to get the same results. Fantastic!

I also live in sherman sw of

I also live in sherman sw of town, in the AM I pick up 12 digital stations ( ch 4 fox kdfw dallas , 3 x ch 10 kten 3x ch 12 cbs,mytv,fox1 -ch 29 kmpx and 3 x 68 ion, qubo , ionl ,wors ) no sensor 2x4 wire hangers and old piece of coax screw thru to groung and strip center out WORKS GREAT ALL SCRAPS

low signal!!!

hi, i build the antenna but i still have low signal but is better than the regular hdtv antenna, i was wonderin if can some one can helpme i allreade tryit in the interior of the house and no works i try the outside and hook it on a dish antenna and i got 50% of signal. please help!!!!!!!!!!!

Distance between converter box and antenna is important!

The antenna works but I found it and other indoor antenna work much better if the antenna is NOT put next to the converter box! Having 3 or more feet apart makes a big difference. I found this true with a number of different converter boxes as I have been busy helping people get this setup.

Larger will not work. The

Larger will not work. The dimension need to be exact. Moving it higher or outside will make the biggest difference.

bigger does work!

BS... I double everything and then added the same on the back side. Not only am I geting ALL dallas channels... I am now picking up sherman's channels in Plano, TX. they are 72 miles away. So bigger WILL work!

tv antenna

This antenna set up works great. If you add a copper wire 15" on each side at top of 1st. bow you will receive the UHF channels. You do not have to x cross the connecting wires. Run both wires straight down each of the bow ties and attach the balun at the bottom rather than in the middle. Give it a try. I used a bbq grid to back of setup. Just be sure it is 4" from bow ties. Using the 2X4 gives you 3 1/2" but I like 4" as it will work better.

bs

I went out, and bought everyhting to make this with even the hammer. The thing don't work, and I did exaclty what it said. People should beware what they see online. This is a bunch of bull SSSSSSSSS

YOUR ANTENNA KICKS BUTT

I bought a 40$ Philips antenna that got 5 channels, half the time. All I wanted was THE STINKIN news!, I moved the antenna all over the house,(within cords reach) indoors and outdoors....I now get channel 9 and 12 news, cartoons for the kiddos that does not cut out- my kids thank you. Perfect! I dont need my family on the couch all day (cable) and this is PERFECT and WORKS BETTER THAN A NAME BRAND ANTENNA! Go figure! Thanks for the video! Happy in Wisconsin

tv antenna not even that complicated

the measurements dont need to be down to the inch its even easier than this as long as you have the "bowties" mine are spaced 5 and a quarter inches a part i have made many of these for myself and family they work i get 42 over the air channels and most are at least 65 miles away from me. i have mine outside under my deck and grounded. the only down fall to putting it outside in ohio is weather i have to do repairs every 6 months or so its at ground level no tall buildings are around. My point being you might have to adjust the measurements acorrding to where you live
