There are really two parts to getting a HDHomeRun setup to work with MythTV.
- HDHomeRun Installation
- Generic HDTV Tuner Configuration
Getting the HDHomeRun detected by MythTV was very simple for me. It's some simple you may wonder if you're missing something. Getting the channels all mapped correctly was much more difficult, but that would be the case with any HDTV tuner...the problems were not specific to the HDHomeRun.
HDHomeRun with MythTV Installation Overview
HDHomeRun Installation
Each HDHomeRun has a number printed on a label on the bottom. Go into the "Add Tuner" function in mythtv-setup, enter the number printed on the bottom of your HDHomeRun into that box and press finish. It's really that simple.
HDHomeRun with KnoppMyth
I had no issues at all with getting the HDHomeRun properly detected and installed.
HDHomeRun with MythDora
I could not get the HDHomeRun connected until I disabled the software firewall, so there may be an issue there. Leave a comment if you know what needs to be opened. I'm already inside a hardware firewall, so I didn't have much risk in disabling mine.
Generic HDTV Tuner Configuration
This is a much more complicated process, especially if you are planning on using QAM (Cable TV) like me.
Basically you need to map your channels and then match them up with a channel listing from the TV scheduling source.
I initially planned to document this myself here, using my firsthand experience. Due to the upcoming change from Zap2It to Schedules Direct, I'm not going to spend the time to document a process that may very well be obsolete by the time you read this.
For now, I'll point you to the HDHomeRun Documentation from the Ubuntu Wiki. That's primarily what I used, and will do for the time being. I'd like to update this section after the Schedules Direct cut-over.
Conclusion
Once the tuner is added and channels are mapped, you can watch and record HDTV as if the tuner were a PCI card in your backend. It's really no different.
Overall, the places where I had trouble had more to do with the channel mapping issues with my local cable system, and were not really related to this device.
If you are planning to purchase an HDTV tuner, a HDHomeRun should be on your short list of products to consider.
DVRUpgrade.com provided the HDHomeRun for this review, and sells the HDHomeRun for around $169.
