MythTV - The Open Source SlingBox

A SlingBox lets people watch their video devices away from home over their broadband connection. You don't need to buy a Slingbox to do this with your MythTV recordings. MythStreamTV, a module for the MythWeb interface to MythTV makes this possible.

After installing MythStreamTV there is a new option on the MythWeb home page.

Selecting StreamTV brings you to a page to select what you want to watch.

One advantage of a real SlingBox is that it will automatically detect and adjust to available bandwidth. MythStreamTV can't do that.

You need to manally tell MythStreamTV what setting to use for the video stream. Generally, after a little experimentation, you can figure out which settings work the best for you for different types of shows.

Generally each setting is a trade-off between quality and bandwidth usage. To decrease bandwidth requirements, you need to cut down the quality.

The next screen will start the streaming server and give you a link to launch your player using either mms or http.

The webpage that launches the streaming server has buttons to control the stream. It take a little getting used to having buttons in a web browser that control your media player, but it works.

While not as nice of an implimentation as a real SlingBox from the UI and automatic bandwidth adjustment perspectives, MythStreamTV is free and may be all you need.

Cool, huh? Digg It.
